The site of one of the early settlements on the Richmond River, Broadwater is a bustling, active town centered around the sugar mill right in the heart of the village. For many months of the year the mill is a vibrant part of the town. Huge cane trucks travel many kilometres along the back roads, bringing the harvest to the mill to be crushed by the New South Wales Sugar Milling Company. During the crushing season, from early June to the end of the year, spectacular cane fires can be seen and tours of the sugar mill are frequently available.
Many quaint old buildings line the highway with antique shops and the delightful
Melba's Verandah Restaurant (formerly Ostas), where you can dine on local produce in the elegant surrounding of a fine old Queenslander house and beautiful gardens serving local produce and light meals.
Turn off the Pacific Highway at Broadwater and enjoy an alternate route to Evans Head driving through the Broadwater National Park and enjoy spectacular views of the coastland and the beautiful wildflowers in spring.
